General Travel Ball FAQ

What league are the Millers a part of?
MYBA is part of the MBL, or the Metro Baseball League.

Is there a "home" field?
Neiman Sports Complex  by Fort Snelling is our home field.

What size field will my player be on?
MYBA adheres to MBL guidelines below:

  • 9- and 10-year-olds: 60-foot base paths, 46 feet from pitching rubber to home plate
  • 11-year-olds: 65-foot base paths, 46 feet from pitching rubber to home plate
  • 12-year-olds: 75-foot base paths, 52 feet from pitching rubber to home plate
  • 13-year-olds: 80-foot base paths, 54 feet from pitching rubber to home plate
  • 14- and 15-year-olds: 90-foot base paths, 60 feet, 6 inches from pitching rubber to home plate (regulation size)

Is there a handbook of rules?
MYBA is part of the Metro Baseball League (MBL) and we abide by those rules. You can click here for the full league rules or for brief summaries of rules at each age of play.

What is the time commitment?
Teams are encouraged to hold indoor practices a few times every month over the winter. 12U - 14/15U teams are provided with a stipend to enable more frequent practices  at indoor facilities throughout the winter. Coaches and families will need to work together to find a schedule that works best for everyone on the team since many players have winter athletic commitments. More frequent outdoor practices will take place as soon as the weather allows; typically late March/early April.

  • At least three 90-minute practices are recommended each week during April until the start of the regular season.
  • First games usually take place around the last week of April/first week of May.
  • Families can expect 1-2 practices each week during the regular season and 14-16 league games, which will primarily take place on weeknights. This ends up being roughly 3 evenings a week dedicated to baseball.
  • There are 3-4 tournaments from May - June and these all take place on weekends.
  • The MBT State Tournament and the MYAS Gopher State Tournament of Champions both take place in July.
  • In total, a team could have 25-50 games during a season depending on how they perform in tournaments.

We know that family comes first and there are obligations that will need to take precedence, but since the baseball season is so short, we ask that players prioritize being at practices and games. There will be an opportunity to provide your player's team with "blackout" dates for vacations, weddings, etc. and we ask that you provide any known conflicts so that coaches can prepare accordingly.

What does coaching entail?
Since player development is a core value for MYBA, we also prioritize giving coaches the training and support they need. Click here to read more about the process of becoming a Millers coach and the expectations for coaching.

What does being a Team Manager entail?
The Team Manager is a critical role on any travel team and teams generally have two managers. Team Managers fulfill a wide variety of roles including managing the teams finances, completing necessary paperwork for tournaments, and coordinating team events. Click here for more in-depth information about what is expected of team managers.

What are Dibs?
In order to maintain reasonable fees while operating our Mini Miller and Travel Team programs, we rely on volunteers for nearly all aspects of the programs. As a way of ensuring family volunteerism is relatively equal, we have "dibs" opportunities . These dibs are essentially just blocks of time spent volunteering for MYBA. Please click here to read our full Volunteer Policy and expectations.

Why are tryouts in the fall?
Holding all ages tryouts and forming teams in the fall helps MYBA align with our peer organizations, simplify and streamline registration, allows us to have greater flexibility in our tryout times, and gives our travel teams more time to coalesce thereby giving them a better chance of success during the season. For the 2025 season and earlier, only 12U+ tryouts were in the fall, but the decision was made to move all ages to the fall tryout schedule starting with the 2026 season.

Is my child the right age for travel baseball?
For the 2026 season, if your child was born after September 1, 2010 and before April 30, 2017, then they are in the correct age range for one of our travel teams. Feel like your child isn't ready for travel baseball or is still a little too young? Don't forget to check out our Mini Millers program. Registration for the 2026 season will likely open sometime in Feb-Mar 2026.
