Round 1 of tryouts is to assess the foundational skills of a player.
 
The format is as follows:

40-Yd Dash 

  • Each player will have 2 opportunities to run a timed 40-yd dash.

Infield 

  • Each player will receive 4-8 ground balls hit at them, to their left, and to their right. 
  • Players will be evaluated based on abilities, including: 
    • Footwork and hands
    • Proper throwing technique/body control 
    • Quickness/Lateral movements 
    • Arm strength

Outfield  

  • Each player will receive 4-8 fly balls (from a machine to give consistency) at them, to their left/right, in front of them, and over their head. 
  • Players will be evaluated based on abilities, including: 
    • Fly ball judgement 
    • Range to front, left, right and back 
    • Catching the ball

Radar Gun  

  • Each player will have the opportunity to throw 5 times at a radar gun. 
  • Players will have the opportunity to stretch and warm-up before this station.

Hitting 

  • Each player will receive between 8-12 underhand tosses from a coach. 
  • Players will be evaluated based on abilities, including:
    • Overall swing mechanics 
    • Ability to make solid contact 
    • Exit Velocity (the speed the ball leaves the player’s bat) measured by a radar gun 
  • Each player will receive between 8-12 overhand pitches from a coach, at an age-appropriate speed. 
  • Players will be evaluated based on abilities, including: 
    • Overall swing mechanics 
    • Ability to make solid contact 
    • Power
